Day 63 - May 11

Day 63 - May 11

The weekend was one day too short, and I could’ve used another day for rest after last week.

This is week three of the current block and the last full week before we head to Germany for six days of racing

The morning was business as usual: rollers and some short Lemond accelerations. After our lunch break, we were on the track in the afternoon for four moto push efforts. The twist for this session though was a two-up effort. My training partner and I took even turns riding from the first and second positions.

Being in either position has its own challenges and advantages. As the second rider, you’re already behind and have to dig to find more speed and get around the first rider. Luckily if you time things well, you can use their slipstream for extra speed. As the first rider, you’ve got the lead to maintain, but you’re cutting the wind for the rider behind you.

The dynamic reminds me of something about motivation.

Sometimes we're chasing something we've locked in our sights. Sometimes we need to avoid getting caught. Either way, it's worth being ready for both roles.

Being ready to chase and ready to hold your lead are two different skills. Both need training.

In your pursuit, are you chasing something down or holding something off?
