Day 53 - May 1
Today was the first full gym and LeMond session of the new block. Breakfast was quick: a smoothie of whey protein, oats, milk, banana, peanut butter, and cottage cheese. I packed two bananas for the road as I headed to the center.
The gym was a full house. Five BMX riders shared the space with us. The camaraderie helped keep energy levels high, and considering I was still relatively fresh, the weights moved quickly. Those bananas came in handy, they kept me feeling topped up through the session.
Typically after completing the weightlifting I would break for lunch and return in the afternoon for the LeMond sprints. I decided to push a little further while I still had momentum. Once the lifting was through, I went straight to the bike for eight high torque efforts.
To ensure the sprints were still good quality, I rested well between each rep. After four, I took a 25-minute break to fully recover before continuing. I was happy to see consistent cadence targets across all eight efforts.
Given the choice between taking the lunch break and coming back fresher versus pushing through right after the gym, I chose the less conservative option. Nothing monumental, just a chance to push my edge and know I could do it. Getting to lunch late freed up my afternoon for better recovery.
Anticipating an upcoming workout has a mental cost. Getting it done frees up more than time.
Where in your pursuit are you paying a mental cost by delaying something you know you need to do?
